Downstairs at the Esquire

The Esquire Tavern opened in 1933, to celebrate the end of Prohibition. After 85 years, the space, with its long, burnished wood bar and pressed-tin ceiling, is still as charming as ever, but it’s Downstairs, a new offshoot situated on San Antonio’s Riverwalk, that makes you feel like you’re in on a secret. The dimly lit speakeasy-style bar offers both impeccably made classic cocktails as well as a wine selection that would please the biggest of Champagne nerds—perfect to wash down a dozen oysters and handcrafted charcuterie.
