Powerful Grenache - Wine & Spirits Magazine

Powerful Grenache

Serge & Marie is named for vineyard manager Serge Soulatge (above) and winemaker Marie Verges. (Photo courtesy of the winery)

In 2007, American Dan Kravitz, the owner of Hand Picked Selections, bought 13.5 acres of vineyards in Roussillon, the French part of Catalonia; he’s since expanded the holdings to 23. He also does some work in the local coops, a group called La Tautavelloise formed by the merger of three coops in Tautavel and Vingrau. Serge & Marie is based on old-vine grenache with 20 percent carignan and syrah. Black fruit flavors sit comfortably atop the tight weave of fine-grained tannins. Powerful and just short of raisinated, this carries a whisper of Maury’s dry winds in the pale orange-zest accent to its finish.
