Los Angeles: Sur Le Vert

Sur Le Vert is French for “on the green”—a reference to the décor and location off of Beverly Canon Gardens. (Photo: Ryan Gebuty)

The green in Sur Le Vert references its location adjacent to the Beverly Canon Gardens as well as the color of the wine bar’s décor—the whimsical space is filled with emerald-green walls, booths and lampshades. Opened by Nicole Dougherty and Zach Negin of Tabula Rasa Bar, this Beverly Hills newcomer is glitzier than its Thai Town sister, even if the wine list has a parallel focus on small, family-run wineries with a natural slant. Dougherty curates the list with alternative grape varieties for the adventurous palate, like Ka’ Manciné 2021 Galeae Rosesse di Dolceacqua and Tessier 2022 Soul Love—a skin-contact blend of riesling, mourtaou, negrette and merlot from the Central Coast. General Manager and sommelier Sean Beckner-Carmitchel,  previously of the Mina Group and Hotel Bel-Air, runs the floor offering bespoke recommendations and decanting bottles into a collection of eccentric vessels, including a glass spiral and a ceramic elephant.

Chef Ben Stephens, previously of Church & State and Acquerello, offers a menu of small plates that starts with caviar—Daurekni or Royal Ossetra—paired with Pascal Ponson Champagne Brut Prestige Tradition. There’s also a salted grilled cheese sandwich so decadent it rivals any in the city. Try it with the Ciro Biondi Etna Rosso Outis, a light bodied, high-acid red to take on all that richness.
