Oaxacan native Efrain Nolasco launched this mezcal to help support the small village of San Juan Del Río where he grew up. At 48 percent alcohol, this isn’t a tame mezcal, yet it’s fascinating. Give it a sniff and marvel at the scents of ripe pineapple, lime and watermelon; the typical smoke notes are there, but it’s more a background note, while lovely citrus tartness and fruit sweetness dance center stage. It’s great on its own, but shines in simpler cocktail preparations, like in an agave-sweetened Margarita.
