In 2014, longtime owner Jeannette Etheredge sold this historic bar to April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman (of New York’s John Dory and The Spotted Pig). Now, the bar crowd is as likely to be drinking Barolo and eating crispy pig tails as tossing back cocktails. Bloomfield applies her spare-no-part cuisine to the Italian-American ethos of North Beach; the wines have been selected by Ceri Smith of Biondivino (SF’s go-to shop for natural-leaning Italian wines) and Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon. Mostly, it’s all about Italy, from Liguria to Sicily, with a significant dose of old-school Tuscan reds.
