Mama Oakland

Josiah Baldivino and Stevie Stacionis have created a deceptively unpretentious restaurant next door to their Oakland wine shop, Bay Grape. In the style of a family dinner at grandma’s house, guests are served a starter, a bowl of pasta and dessert for a very reasonable $30. The wine list spans the globe but is easy to navigate thanks to quirky icons (like a drawing of a cassette for ‘classic’). The spaghetti with a meaty sugo tastes great with the Pezzuoli Lambrusco, but there’s also a “Baller” list for those preferring to wash it down with a ’94 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape or an ’08 Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi.
