Winemaker Angelo Gaja Receives Institute of Masters of Wine Award

Italy’s Angelo Gaja has been named the Institute of Masters of Wine’s ninth Winemakers’ Winemaker.

The award, which has been given out since 2011, recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of winemaking. Each year, the recipient is chosen by a panel comprised of past winners and winemaker MWs.

Angelo Gaja was born in Alba, Italy in 1940 and holds a degree in oenology and a Master of Economics from the University of Turin. He joined the family business, Gaja Winery, in 1961 and took over its management in 1969. Today, Gaja Winery owns a wine estate in Piedmont, two in Tuscany and, through a joint venture with the Graci family, one on the southern slope of Sicily’s Mount Etna.
