Ed McCarthy: A Remembrance
(1936-2024)

Wine writers are connectors. They tie producers to wine drinkers, sharing information from both sides. Ed McCarthy’s career as a wine writer connected millions of wine drinkers to a better understanding of what growers and producers are doing. By extending the tech-based Dummies series to wine, McCarthy and his wife, Mary Ewing-Mulligan, MW, launched Wine for Dummies in 1995, now in its seventh edition. It has been translated into 38 languages and has sold more than a million copies around the world. The book generated a range of spinoffs, including California Wine for Dummies, French Wine for Dummies, Italian Wine for Dummies and Champagne for Dummies.

Based in New York City, Ed was a central figure in wine writing circles for decades, always a welcome dinner companion for his charm, wit and thoughtful commentary, especially when it came to Champagne. He will be missed by fellow wine writers, by his readers, and by the family he leaves behind—including Mary, his wife and partner since 1983, his three children and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Ed’s name be made to the World Wildlife Fund or the Best Friends Animal Society.

Joshua Greene is the editor and publisher of Wine & Spirits magazine.
