Wink Lorch, founder of Wine Travel Guides and a frequent visitor to the Jura for 12 years, has collected her observatons into the first English-language book about the region. It’s a welcome volume for Jura fans and a must-read for anyone interested in learning about the wines of this unusual appellation.

Lorch opens with several meaty chapters on Jura wines, discussing appellations, terroir, grape varieties, how the wines are made and how they taste—familiarizing the reader with uncommon varieties such as poulsard and savagnin, and atypical production methods like aging wines sous voile (under a veil of yeast). Her personal acquaintance with Jura vignerons is apparent in the comprehensive set of producer profiles, and she rounds out coverage with brief sections on the region’s history and local foods, as well as a helpful list of recommendations on where to stay and eat when visiting the Jura.

is the Italian wine editor at Wine & Spirits magazine.
