When we set out to compile a list of LA’s best wine and food destinations, we aimed for 50—as the magazine has done before in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. But as our team dined out and culled recommendations from friends in the trade, we quickly realized that 50 wasn’t going to be enough—nor was 60, nor 100; things were opening too quickly to take a meaningful snapshot. As we went to press, Tartine Manufactory threw open the doors to a 40,000-square-foot space in DTLA, and Angler, from chef Joshua Skenler of Saison, in San Francisco, was poised to start serving. So we gave up on round numbers, highlighting instead the 42 places that speak most clearly about what makes for an essential LA wine-and-food experience.
