At our 10th Annual Top of the List event in NYC this past May, Will Elliott, the bar director of Brooklyn’s Maison Premiere, stirred up hundreds of glasses of The Shining Path, a house favorite. “Though brightened by the lively citrus of lemon cordial and the delicate sophistication of elderflower, it has a boldly bitter backbone that keeps you thirsty for more,” Elliot says. He likes it as an aperitif before dinner, or in the afternoon.
¾ ounce Salers gentian liqueur
½ ounce Avèze gentian liqueur
½ ounce St. Germain elderflower liqueur
½ ounce lemon juice
½ ounce lemon cordial*
Maurin Quina or Amaro Rinomato (optional)
safflower blossoms (optional)
Pinch of grated lemon zest
Makes two quarts
1 ounce vodka
32 ounces lemon juice
32 ounces superfine sugar
Add the first five ingredients to a stemmed pilsner glass. Add crushed ice. Swizzle. Garnish with a float of Maurin Quina or Amaro Rinomato, a safflower blossom and lemon zest.
Peel the lemons and put the rinds into a large container (Reserve the peeled lemons for another use.) Add vodka, and leave overnight or for 12 hours. Then add the lemon juice and sugar and whisk until dissolved. Strain into a clean container, cover and refrigerate. The cordial will last for three to four months.
