While it may be more pedantic than your average action-packed graphic novel, this illustrated history of Champagne—written by Daniel Lorson (communications director at the CIVC) and Jean-Marie Cuzin (a script writer) and illustrated by Erik Arnoux—is an attractive, carefully researched primer on the history of Champagne. The story opens in 2010 with the discovery of Champagne from the early 19th century in a shipwreck on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, then heads back to the Middle Ages before narrating the twists and turns as Champagne growers moved from making pale red wines to vin gris to heavily sweetened bubbles before finally focusing on the dry sparkling wine we recognize today.

Longtime senior editor at Wine & Spirits magazine, Luke now works for the Stanford Technology Ventures Program.

This story appears in the print issue of December 2014.
