Growers of the Year
To determine our Growers of the Year, we asked the vintners behind our American Wineries of the Year to nominate the best grape growers in their region-not including, of course, anyone in their own company. We then combed through our tasting data to see which of the nominated vineyards consistently yielded exceptional wine, narrowing the field to three. The following profiles highlight three of the best sites for growing grapes on the West Coast, and the people who coax that greatness out of them.

American Wineries of the Year
Our American Wineries of the Year have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and consistency. The 2008 list represents the top performers from more than 3,382 newly released American wines we tasted blind in our offices over the past 12 months. We selected these 36 American Wineries of the Year based on four criteria: the brand's highest score, how many of its wines scored 90 or better, the average score of its recommended wines and the percentage of its wines recommended in our tastings.

International Wineries of the Year
A great winery, in our estimation, should consistently turn out wines that are not only delicious, but also clearly express their particular regions. So we combed through our data-5,978 wines tasted over the past 12 months-to identify these 64 International Wineries of the Year. They range the world, from Burgundy and Barossa to Patagonia and Vinho Verde.

Spirits of the Year
Every year, more new bottlings of booze are brought to market than I can even begin to track, though fortunately, they tend to follow a predictable pattern. There will be vodkas-dozens and dozens of vodkas, many of them flavored. This year, what with the marketing buzz about "farm-fresh" mixology, they skew vegetable, with flavors such as cucumber leading the pack.
