From the team behind SoHo’s jazz-inspired Charlie Bird, Pasquale Jones is poised to be another downtown wine destination. Partners Robert Bohr, who curated the list at Cru through 2010, and Grant Reynolds, the wine director, have assembled a “Seasonal Short List”—65 or so wines, mainly from France and Italy—all under $85 per bottle (the staff will sell half a bottle of any of the still wine selections). The list continues with a focus on back (back) vintages: the youngest of six Mastroberardino bottles clocks in at 45 years old. Other sections are dedicated to elite French and Italian producers like François Raveneau, Giuseppe Rinaldi and Produttori del Barbaresco, to name just a few. Sit at the bar to see the two wood-fired ovens in action; their glow brings pizza dough to life and crisps the skin on smoked pheasant. Executive chef Ryan Hardy and chef de cuisine Tim Caspare, most recently of San Francisco’s Quince and Cotogna, employ the wood flames on meat, vegetables and pizza, with homemade pastas rounding out the menu. The service, like the ovens, is warm and impressive, and hospitality is included in the price.
