Fondamenta Misericordia has long been a go-to destination for thirsty locals. The long, canal-facing walkway hidden deep in Cannaregio is populated by a string of mediocre cafes, pubs and osterie, where Campari spritzes flow freely and wine is primarily poured from a spout. In that context, the new Vino Vero stands out: A polished, standing-room-only wine bar with a natural slant, it offers both a friendly staff—a real novelty in Venice—and an ever-changing by-the-glass list, which includes a variety of bubbles, as well as a handful of whites and reds that range between €3 and €10. On a recent visit, they were pouring a rust-colored pinot grigio from Tenuta dalle Ore, an up-and-coming winery in Vicenza’s Colli Berici, and La Stoppa’s Trebbiolo, a still red made in the hills outside Piacenza from barbera and bonarda grapes. As is tradition in Italy, when one drinks, one must eat, and when one eats, one must drink. Vino Vero offers whole-wheat crostini made fresh hourly with ingredients such as vine-ripened summer tomatoes or a sliver of zucchini frittata.
